What We Do
Fire Ring Farm is a sustainable community farm, herbalist learning space, and event rental space in Connecticut. Established as a family farm by Nancy Livensparger and her family in 2009, Fire Ring Farm is located in Portland, CT, and acknowledged by the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA). Nestled on approximately four acres of land with picturesque New England views of the Connecticut River, the farm is enveloped by the Palmer Taylor Preserve, which the Middlesex Land Trust manages. Both Fire Ring Farm and Palmer Taylor Preserve occupy the ancestral lands of the Wangunk and Quinnipiac indigenous peoples.
Fire Ring Farm is deeply committed to cultivating delicious and nutritious produce through the practice of biodynamic and sustainable farming methods. While we are not certified organic by the USDA, we do use organic farming practices. We abstain from the use of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides, ensuring that our farming techniques sustain rather than deplete our precious natural resources, including land and water.
We implement a variety of sustainable agriculture strategies, including:- crop rotation- cover cropping- the application of organic compost- the introduction of beneficial insects- mechanical and manual weed control- efficient irrigation methods- consistent soil care-a focus on seasonal crop growth
We are also a proud partner of Cultivating Justice: a community-led organization meeting community-identified needs around food security, land access, environmental justice, civic engagement, power building, and pathways towards agriculture for people underrepresented in Connecticut's farming community. Our goal is to nurture Connecticut's next generation of farmers of color.
